When you're living with depression, no matter how well you've been doing or how happy you've been, some days the lights just go out. But where there's a will, there is a way. So here are some things to remember to get your light shining again. When the lights go out, remember that you're loved. Remember that your mind is currently feeding you lies and that you're not alone, even though that may be how you feel in this moment. When the lights go out, remember that you're strong. You may feel tired and weak, or that you can't go on, but remember all that you've accomplished. Remember how you overcame your past. And remember that God had your back then and He still has your back now. He will carry you through this too. When the lights go out, remember not to feed the darkness. Do not dwell in the pretend sadness. Don't listen to that depressing playlist you have stored on Spotify and lay in bed all day. Get up, get dressed, listen to fun and uplifting music, and rebuke these false feelings away! When the lights go out, remember to turn the lights on, literally. Make your room bright. Open your curtains and let the light shine in. Go outside and stand in the sunlight. When you feel dark on the inside it doesn't do any good to actually stay in the dark. Light can quite literally overcome the darkness you are feeling. When the lights go out, remember to stay hydrated. Drink that water! A lot of times when you are feeling down in the dumps you're actually just thirsty! Maybe it's because when you were a kid your mom forced you to drink a glass a water every time you cried because you would start to hyperventilate. Maybe you're dehydrated and drinking water gives you energy. Either way, it works. So go drink some water. When the lights go out, remember to move. Get up. Go out. Get off your butt. Go downstairs. Go upstairs. Play just dance. Wrestle your siblings. Chase your dog. It really doesn't matter. Just do something to awaken that part of your brain! When the lights go out, remember to get a good nights sleep. I don't know why when you're sad you insist on staying up late and dwelling on some terrible that happened to you in the third grade but you are not helping yourself. Go to bed early so you wake up at a decent time the next day and feel rested and maybe you will end the vicious cycle of tiredness. When the lights go out, remember that this moment is temporary. Push through it. Pray through it. Distract yourself. Know that you are strong and God is bigger, greater, and much more powerful than your depression. Remember all of the above and know that this too will come to an end. The lights are out for me today so I wrote this note as a reminder to myself. Hopefully it'll be a good reminder for someone else. Push through the darkness and let your light shine. "Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light." "And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." Happy first Thankful Thursday of the New Year!! What better way to spend the first week of the new year by being thankful? My Thankful Thursday post this week is dedicated to ringing in the new year. I realize I already posted my New Year blog, but I am just extremely thankful for what this new year will bring. It already looks to be kicking off to a great start! One of those reason would be my "Happy Thoughts" jar. I saw this post on Facebook and Pinterest several times and finally decided to start one. All you need is a jar, some paper, and a pen handy. I also saw others title their jars "Blessings" or "Memories" so feel free to get creative with it and decorate it however you like! Now, whenever something good happens, big or small, you write it down and put it in the jar. Next New Year's Eve you dump it out and read all your happy moments from the year! I think it is such a great idea and it is so uplifting to take a moment and reflect on the good in everyday. So I am very thankful for this cute idea to bring more positivity and praise to God each day! It's your turn to take a moment and be thankful! What can you thank God for this Thursday? Will you create your own "Happy Thoughts" jar? Leave a comment below or on the Facebook Page! Much love and God bless, -X |
